Please use the following link to access Garth’s Manitoba Obituary to understand how he became the outstanding man that we were fortunate to know here in Ontario and Quebec. https://www.raesfs.ca/obituary/Garth-Short 20 years ago, Garth a Manitoba prairie man who was working for Agriculture Canada, was transferred to Ottawa, where the search for a new home began. Although he visited many areas of Ottawa, Garth was drawn to Embrun. A small country town, surrounded by farmland with a good variety of stores and a certain restaurant called Lucky 7 that truly got his attention. Garth took no time at making friends, starting with his neighbours Ryan and Barry. In recent years, Garth considered buying a new home that would better accommodate his passion for woodworking but the 20-year bond that developed with his neighbours was too much of a factor. One afternoon, as a new resident of Embrun, with his mail in hand, Garth decided to go have a meal at Lucky 7 where he met John for the 1st time. Collecting mail and stopping in at Lucky 7 soon became a routine and although many friendships were made, Garth integrated the Van-Lane’s and was soon considered part of the family. Later, this same friendship was the base of what later became the “4 musketeers”. Hockey, billiards, snowmobiling and eventually, “The River” is what built yet another bond that included Moe and Justin. Garth’s professional career at Ag Canada, concluded in 2022 but his undeniable passion for farming remained. All those who knew Garth, received an education on all aspects of farming including the differences between the Prairies and our local Eastern Ontario Farms and that, whether you wanted to know or not. In the summer, Garth’s home and site at the river included gardens that produced vegetables that fed both his neighbours and fellow campers. Garth would also fill every pot he had with flowers. When asked why so many gardens, Garth would label it as therapy. Garth’s unquenchable thirst to have a positive impact on people’s lives will truly be missed in our community.
